California Dental Plans - The Pro's & Con's Of California Dental Plan Options

If you happen to live in California, you have a lot of good dental plans to choose from. As one of the largest states in population the competition has driven some prices down, depending on which type of dental plan you choose to buy. Not all all of these plans are the same. As a matter of fact, there are big differences in the type of plan, the care you'll receive, how much you'll save and even if you can see a dentist right away and be covered for certain conditions.

Let's take a look at two of the most common types of dental plans available in California.

Dental Insurance - Unfortunately, insurance of any kind does not cover any problems that you had when you bought the policy. This means that if have a cavity or broken tooth that is causing you pain, you'll end up paying for this yourself if you haven't already owned the policy for at least a year or two. Think about it for a minute and you'll see that this makes sense. Homeowners insurance won't cover an existing hole in the roof, auto insurance won't cover an existing dent in the hood, health insurance won't cover you if you already have cancer, so what makes you think that dental insurance will fix your cavity? It won't.

Your next option is called a discount dental plan. These plans are not insurance so you can see a participating dentist almost immediately and save a bunch of money off the cost of getting your teeth fixed. Savings start at 10% and are as high as 60%. I've seen 60% discounts on dentures offered by discount dental plans in California. The only stipulation with dental discount plans compared to insurance is that you must pay the discounted fee in full at the time of your appointment. They're giving you a big discount for paying them cash.

That means that if the usual fee was $200.00 and your discount was 50%, you'd have to have $100.00 when you went to your appointment. Piece of cake.

Summary - The votes are in, but the winner is going to be decided by you. If you are in need of a California dental plan I suggest that you go with the obvious choice, but, of course, that's your decision.
